New SNL Cast Member auditions

Saturday Night Live is desperate to hire black female comics–but the show sure had to be embarrassed into it. SNL suffered some bad PR when cast member Kenan Thompson told TV Guide¬†the show just couldn’t find sufficiently talented young black women of color to join the cast. That’s why Keenan has kept showing up in drag over the years.

Well, the comic community wasn’t thrilled to hear that. Then the show was even more embarrassed when Scandal star Kerry Washington showed up to host, and the writers had to work in an admission that the guest host was the only woman of color in the cast. That was the final straw, and SNL finally broke down and began to do some rare mid-season casting to try and cover their collective asses.

Lorne Michaels tried to be stealthy about that, but news has gotten out. Now you can check out the gals who are mostly in the lead to join the SNL cast, with some links so that you can keep up with the talented ladies who don’t make it…

Kerry Coddett is a former member of the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC, which has joined L.A.’s Groundlings and Chicago’s Second City as a prime breeding ground for future SNL talent. Here’s some pretty raw video of a mix between performance and stand-up, with the crowd pretty much behind Kerry. Her biggest problem is that she’s also really outspoken about SNL’s segregated casting over the years–so we’ll see how much talent Lorne Michaels can ignore over a grudge…

Natasha Rothwell is currently part of the Maude sketch collective at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater, and she’s become a crowd favorite–and while she didn’t write this¬†flight attendant sketch, you can imagine Lorne Michaels getting excited over a gal who can put together a recurring character…

Sasheer Zamata has already gotten some exposure on Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, and this UCB veteran is the gal most likely to get signed to SNL as both a writer and performer–given her talents as both a stand-up comic and an improv artist. Yeah, we’re thinking Lorne won’t miss a chance to diversify the SNL writing staff, too…

Bresha Webb is working regularly on the Love That Girl sitcom, and she’s a pretty amazing comic actress who could provide some real character diversity on top of SNL’s desperate diversity. Lorne Michaels will also probably love her Beyonce impersonation–and she’s been working on her comic timing with some stand-up, too. The biggest strike against Bresha is that she’s the gal who revealed SNL’s secret color-coded auditions via a posting on her Instagram account. Oops…

Tanisha Long is our final gal who makes our own short list–mostly because her work on Girl Code gives her plenty of experience, and she’s got a pretty good hook with her series where she recaps movies. And we’ll note that we’re thinking at least two of these gals have a shot, because SNL is going to look pretty lame if they just cast one new member to try and look good. Now enjoy Tanisha talking about one of our favorite films…
