One of the greatest “Science Guys” who’s ever actually called himself a “Science Guy” is 58 years old today.
The man, the myth, the legend known as Bill Nye the Science Guy is celebrating a birthday today and thankfully for the cause of science and all things science-y, he’s still going strong.
Nye was born in Washington D.C. to two equally awesome parents: His mother worked as a codebreaker during World War II and his father spent four years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. He earned his Bachelors of (what else?) Science in mechanical engineering from Cornell University where he studied under another great man of science Carl Sagan.
By day, he worked for the Boeing company but he also got bit by the entertainment bug and started doing stand-up comedy at night. Eventually, he quit his job at Boeing to work for the long running Seattle, Wash. sketch comedy series Almost Live! where his wacky science demonstrations earned him his “Science Guy” moniker. He went on to host his own very popular kids’ science show Bill Nye the Science Guy, which won a whopping 18 Emmys in just five years.
The show and his tireless efforts to improve scientific education in public schools and increase awareness of phenomena such as global warming and the threat of increasingly destructive weather patterns through national lecture tours and his various television appearances have turned him a geek rock star. So we can’t think of a better way to honor the man’s 58th birthday than with a collection of Internet memes that praise his name.
