On November 9, 1967, the very first issue of Rolling Stone was published. The magazine had modest beginnings. Rolling Stone’s founder Jann Wenner had to borrow $7,500 from his family and his girlfriend’s (soon to be wife’s) family to get the magazine off the ground. Now Rolling Stone is one of the most popular magazines in the world.
Rolling Stone initially reported on the hippie counterculture of the era but embraced traditional journalistic standards that other counterculture publications avoided. Although it primarily focused on music, Wenner wrote in the first issue that the magazine “is not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes the music embraces.” The magazine quickly broadened its focus and began featuring political writings by Hunter S. Thompson in the 1970s. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was initially published in the pages on Rolling Stone.
In the 1980s, the magazine began to shift its focus to a become a general entertainment magazine. It started to cover television, movies and celebrities. This initially irked some readers, but it also helped lead the way for some of it’s hottest covers. We’ve found some of the sexiest covers Rolling Stone has ever published.
