You might have expected some kind of Goth gal to play the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s partly why nobody really bought into the idea of curvy blonde Elizabeth Olsen–even though the Scarlet Witch isn’t exactly a basic-black kind of witch. That’s why they call her the Scarlet Witch, duh. Anyway, Samuel L. Jackson–fresh off his recent appearance as Nick Fury on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.–has just confirmed via the Wall Street Journal that Elizabeth Olsen is, in fact, playing the Scarlet Witch. Yes, that’ll be alongside Cobie Smulders and Scarlett Johansson. Our inseams may require super powers.

For those who don’t know, the Scarlet Witch is actually Wanda Maximoff. She’s a mutant with the special power to alternate probability via her hex bolts. That’s really a fancy way of saying that the Scarlet Witch can create havoc every time that she waves her arms and blasts powerful waves at assorted things. Those were mostly superheroes back when Wanda and her superspeedy brother Pietro (aka Quicksilver, to be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) were part of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch would eventually learn that Magneto is their father. We’re talking about the very early days of Marvel Comics.

Then they became good guys, and Wanda ended up joining the Avengers–and eventually married an android called The Vision. A lot of us are hoping that the recently reanimated Agent Coulson ends up as that character. Anyway, you don’t look at the Scarlet Witch…

…and think of a cute blonde gal like Elizabeth Olsen. We will not, however, doubt director Joss Whedon’s wisdom in casting the gal known as the Third Olsen Twin. Elizabeth may have been a late boomer, but she’s turned in some fine performances ever since breaking out big with the awkwardly-titled 2011 thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene. She made that movie at the same time as the gimmicky horror movie Silent House, and both films showcased Elizabeth in the lead role.

Since then, Elizabeth has been concentrating on quirky indie stuff, including her upcoming work with Daniel Radcliffe in Kill Your Darlings. Elizabeth has been moving into big projects lately, though. She’s in the upcoming Oldboy remake, and will get a shot at a summer blockbuster in next year’s Godzilla. That one also has her working with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. And now she’s an Avenger, which is a real dream job. We have faith that Elizabeth will nail the part–and if she doesn’t, then you can be sure that the Scarlet Witch will be looking good while casting some spells…
