This week, I decided to take a Beer-cation. And amid my beer haze I thought, why just review a beer and tell my loyal readers what to drink this weekend when I can also visit the brewery and brew pub where the beer is brewed? The Victory Brewery and Brew Pub is one of my favorite places in the world. Think of when Rudy’s dad sees Notre Dame’s Stadium for the first time: “This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen.” That is how I feel every time I go to a great brewery like Victory. This week, Victory’s Donnybrook Stout is what’s on tap.
There is a myth among novice beer drinkers that the darker the beer, the heavier it is, but this could not be more false. Donnybrook is only 3.7% ABV and incredibly smooth. It is a dry Irish stout best served on a nitrogen tap. At first smell and taste, there is a combination of chocolate and coffee notes and flavor. Because of the beer’s smoothness, your palette is never overpowered when drinking Donnybrook, no matter how many you consume.
Along with enjoying this great brew as is, here is a suggestion: fill a pint glass 3/4 full. Then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in, and try it before you judge me right away. It is the adult ice cream float you always wanted. Bring a six pack and some ice cream to your weekend barbecue, and not only will everyone, chicks included, want to see what you are doing, they will love you for your creativity and supply of booze. The next thing you know, you are skinny dipping in the weird neighbor’s pool, the ones who let the kids play outside naked when they were just a tad too old not to be clothed.
I am biased because I am from Southeastern PA, but Victory brewery and brew pub nail the whole “Brewery with a Pub” concept. The place is huge, located in the old warehouse district of Downingtown, PA, and upon entering it has a German beer hall type feel. Victory has 25 of its beers on tap and two more on hand pump casks. Equally impressive is the food like meaty wings, great soft pretzels and awesome sandwiches. If you are in the area, definitely stop by Victory for good food and even better beer.
