‘Rapefruit’ Is Not A Real Fruit, Thankfully

As an editor myself, I know sometimes we make mistakes. For instance, sometimes you think a slice of grapefruit looks like a “G” even though it looks nothing like a “G” and then you put it next to the rest of the letters in “GRAPEFRUIT” and what ends up happening is that it looks like you just have a giant headline that reads “RAPEFRUIT.”

True, we’ve never made that mistake here at COED (not to say we haven’t come close), but that’s exactly what happened over at the Mankato Free Press in yesterday’s paper.

Gawker posed the question, “Is This the Worst Headline in Newspaper History?“

I wouldn’t go that far. It’s not like they printed completely false information like “Dewey Defeats Truman.”

Now if they had printed “Dewey Rapefruits Truman” — that would be the worst headline in newspaper history.
