Oscar “The Blade” Pistorious, the South African athlete who became the first double-amputee sprinter to ever compete in the Olympics, has been arrested for the alleged murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. According to some sources, Oscar apparently mistook his girlfriend for an intruder at which point he shot her in the head and the arm.
The death of anyone is tragic, but South Africa is reeling especially hard because of the celebrity status of both people involved. Oscar was famous because of his Olympic appearances while Reeva was a beautiful model who had appeared in magazines like FHM and was on the verge of blowing up.
The two had been dating for a “couple of months” and had been spotted at various socialite events and appeared to be in a “healthy, fabulous relationship” (source). This weekend she was set to appear on a South African reality show called Tropika Island of Treasure.
While the police are still investigating the case, it should be noted that Oscar has been wary of home intruders beforehand. On November 27th, 2012, Oscar tweeted the following:
The threat of robberies and home invasions in South Africa is very real. The country is #2 on the list of “deaths via firearm” (Colombia is #1).
The story is still developing.
