U.S. Postal Service

Big, if not unexpected news today, when the U.S. Postal Service announced they plan on no longer delivering mails on Saturday. Whether Congress will need to approve the measure and when it might go into effect are still up in the air.

Yes, the idea of mail service might seem passé to younger generations who get their paychecks via direct deposit and their junk mail filtered for them by Gmail instead of having to literally dump it in the trash.

But at its inception, the U.S. Postal Service was a modern marvel, providing daily service to millions of addresses across a vast American landscape.

Now, change seems inevitable. The Post Office is currently losing $25 million a day. Yes, you read that correctly: $25 million every single day. It’s adds up to a shocking annual loss of nearly $16 billion.

Pay 75 years worth of future health care benefits in 10 years? That seems reasonable. You can bet that once the USPS is out of business, UPS, FedEx, etc., will increase prices for letters/packages to people outside of major cities beyond the means by which these people can afford. I am talking to you grandma. That is if the major parcel companies decide to continue services to people outside of major cities. Not a problem for people in major cities, but there are plenty of people living in the sticks who will be directly affected by this.

The should have mentioned that the Post Office is the only government agency stipulated in the Constitution of the United States.
