Think of these photos from the book Subway, Lifeline next time you hear someone tell you about how dangerous New York City actually used to be. Taken anywhere from 1970 to 1982, these photos show a pretty unfiltered view of what straphangers (slang for people who ride the subways) had to deal with. It’s like The Warriors, but real.

So next time you’re about to complain about MTA fares, just be glad you don’t have to deal with as many armed robberies, overdosed junkies, and hunchbacks with bats (is that fresh cocaine on the face of #3?).
