Woman Who Won The Week: Carly Rae Jepsen

If you walk into a biker bar in Sturgis, South Dakota, being cute and adorable leads to your death via punched teeth through brain.

Being cute and adorable in a pop song, however, gets you famous. Making that pop song unbearably catchy doesn’t hurt. That strategy’s worked for Carly Rae Jepsen, who just got a grammy nomination for her implausibly desperate summer love song, “Call Me Maybe.”

Yeah, we make fun of Carly. It’s hard not to when she’s a certified hottie singing about how she hopes a guy will holler at her. Dude, Adele would be more believable singing this. But Carly rocks the song, the video, our eyes, and everyone’s brains: Not only has her song racked up 350 million hits on YouTube, but fan-made tributes are also in the millions.

So why did she win the week? Well, she earned that grammy nod, no matter what you think. This marks a legitimizing of her career, which we hope will be long and full of skin-tight leather suit action movie roles. That’s right, she’s cute now, but if she decides to go Beyonce/Lucy Liu sassy-tough, world peace will be within reach.
