Mike likes 70s music. Wyatt has more modern tastes. Both of these COED editors think they have what it takes to kick off your Saturday night.

Mike’s Pick

One of the reasons I love the music of the ’70s is that music today just sounds different. Yes, I know it’s a cliche, but it’s true. Recording techniques are different, songwriting styles have evolved, even the equipment we listen to our music on is completely different than it used to be — analog to digital. But now I’m going to throw you a curve: because this week I picked the track “I’m Not The Same Without You” off the newest album, Sunken Condos, released by Donald Fagen back in October of this year. It really has a classic feel that only a former member of Steely Dan can infuse into a record. I recommend the entire album. It’s a great way to ramp up your night from a standstill.

Wyatt’s Pick

I know that this is the #1 song on Hype Machine right now but I don’t care because I’ve been digging on this song since Monday. “Down On Life” reminds me of Santigold’s “Disparate Youth” in a very good way–sort of Jamaican but without trying particularly hard (take notes Snoop Lion). The one thing I can’t really understand are the lyrics. “Eggs keep growing out of our ears?” Hmmm. I’m willing to give them a pass, though, because they’re Scandinavian. And yes, that is them in the music video.
