Mike likes 70s music.

Wyatt has more modern tastes.

Both of these COED editors think they have what it takes to kick off your Saturday night.

Mike’s Pick

I think we can admit it: Ace was not a great band. Three albums and they only have one song to show for it. As one of the few people who has probably listened to Ace’s entire catalog, I can attest to the fact that they don’t even have any truly notable album cuts, making them the epitome of the one hit wonder. But what a hit it was. Surprisingly, “How Long” doesn’t tell the tale of a cheating woman, it’s the story of a cheating bandmate who left for another band. But the tune isn’t memorable for it’s lyrics. It’s all about that smooth ’70s sound: bass, keyboard, just enough guitar, simple drumming and killer harmonies over a perfect melodic hook. Awesome.

Wyatt’s Pick

Since I got rocked in last week’s vote when I chose Soul II Soul, I think I’ll speed up the BPM a little bit. That brings me to drum and bass aka my first electronic music love. And when I talk d’n'b I can’t forget about High Contrast (shameless plug to my interview with him). His album The Agony And The Ecstasy was one of my favorite releases of 2012. It showcased some of the newer, more mature steps he was taking as a musician; one of his goals going into recording (but you knew that because you read my interview). While it was refreshing to hear some new sounds from the mastermind who co-wrote the theme song for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games, this remix by S.P.Y. brings some welcome speed and energy to the track “Wish You Were Here.” Try listening to this song and not calling your closest friend for an MDMA hookup. Or just going for a run. Either works.
