Kool-Aid Day is technically a three-day event. It’s always the second weekend of August, and this year’s celebration is a particularly big deal. It’s been 85 years since a guy named Edwin Perkins invented Kool-Aid in Hastings, Nebraska. Back then, the only Kool-Aid flavors were cherry, strawberry, grape, lemon-lime, orange, and raspberry. Perkins Products Company was bought out by Kraft Foods long ago, and now there are over 12 flavors. There is, however, only one Kool-Aid Man. This guy has been busting through walls and fences since the 1970s. Before that, he was a smiling animated face on a pitcher seen in old black & white TV ads. And today, the Kool-Aid Man is a beloved icon who’s regularly invoked and sometimes ridiculed. Those are the breaks for a TV pitchman.
