Pussy Riot! Russian Punk Rockers Get Love From Madonna And Masses! [40 PHOTOS]

Wanna know about the real punks, punk? Then check out the ordeal of the ladies of Pussy Riot—who are currently facing up to seven years in prison for staging a “punk prayer” against Vladimir Putin. Officially, Pussy Riot is a collective of female rockers who hide their identity. For the purposes of the trial, though, Pussy Riot is Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Maria Alyokhina. Those are the three gals who ended up arrested after their protest at a Russian Orthodox cathedral had them calling on the Virgin Mary to, “Throw Putin out!” That would be President Vladimir Putin, of course, who’s stated that the court shouldn’t be too hard on the trio. That was in public. Privately, the court seems to be getting a lot of encouragement to make an example out of Pussy Riot.

Madonna used her concert in Russia last night to publicly express her support, and Pussy Riot is getting plenty of love from their fellow countrymen. Take a look at these pics that tell a pretty weird tale, ranging from editorial cartoons to brave Pussy fans to shots of the band’s guerrilla shows. You’ll also see Nadezhda, Yekaterina, and Maria refusing to be solemn and repentant in court. Nadezhda gets a lot of attention in the pics, since the 22-year-old is considered the leader of Pussy Riot. The philosophy student is well known as an activist, too, beginning when Nadezhda—along with her husband Pyotr Verzilov—held an orgy in a Moscow museum to protest the 2008 election of Putin’s handpicked replacement in the Kremlin. Now check out some serious punk-rock rebellion…
