Tech Salad Sandwich: Sony BRAVIA LED EX640 Internet TV
Damn it Sony BRAVIA LED EX640. Damn it. I like you; I really, really like you. I like you even more than a normal friend should. But there’s one thing holding me back from actually loving you (in that special man-on-Internet TV sort of way). You’re a TV of the future but you have a remote control of the 1990’s. You’re selling yourself short Sony BRAVIA LED EX640. You hear me? A genius TV deserves genius functionality.
The BRAVIA is the latest Internet TV with the Sony Entertainment Network. (Think of it as little cousin of the KDL-HX729 – which was all the rage at this year’s CES.) This model has a lot of the same goods as the KDL-HX729; minus the X-Realty feature that enhances low-grade YouTube videos. But it does have Motionflow 240, which effectively quadruples the refresh rate of the screen, making fast action appear more lifelike – great for sports and high intensity Steven Seagal action films.
BRAVIA is also full HD with edge LED. So you’ll get the most out of Blu-rays and HD content – without having to worry about burn-in, like with plasma screens.
What else?
Not only can you hook the BRAVIA up to your Internet modem for content streaming, but it also comes with a dongle so you can go cable-free. Awesome!
Welcome to TV watching, 2012.
A man could simply fall in love with a TV experience like this. Except, what the hell (note I’m swearing) is up with the remote control? When it comes to Internet TV, this is the worst navigation device known to humanity. Try typing a URLs – one letter at a time. It’s like trying to text the Gettysburg Address, without a predictive text feature on your cell phone. (Example: With a remote, try typing in the URL:http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.com/ without losing your mind.)
More problems: When I mean to hit the DOWN button, I always accidently hit HOME – then I have to start all over again. (To change aspect ratio, there’s a “WIDE” button. What the hell does that even mean?) A smart functionality feature would be touchscreen or voice activation – similar to Siri on an iPhone. Listen, Sony BRAVIA, even a separate keyboard would be nice. (Though, if you happen to own a VAIO laptop you can hook it up and use the keyboard for the BRAVIA.)
So for now, Sony BRAVIA, let’s stay good friends. Okay? I like hooking my laptop up to you and having a 60” monitor experience, but come back to me when you sort out your remote control issue. Then maybe I’ll fall in love with you.
