Jeanne Tripplehorn was a new girl when she busted out with a big-screen debut as a kinky police psychologist in 1992′s Basic Instinct. Sharon Stone ran off with the stardom, but Jeanne enjoyed some cutting-edge cred as Ben Stiller’s fiancee. That relationship fell apart, but Jeanne kept busy getting raves as Tom Cruise’s wife in The Firm. Then her momentum washed away with the (perceived) box-office failure of Waterworld. We kept tripping to Jeanne as she stole scenes in indie films–including a limousine lesbian session with Salma Hayek in 2000′s Timecode. Jeanne then moved on to serious MILFdom as one of Bill Paxton’s wives in the HBO polygamy drama Big Love. (Check out a Youtube clip that shows why she would’ve still been plenty alone for any lucky guy.) Jeanne shows up on tonight’s New Girl as the ex-wife of Zooey Deschanel’s boyfriend, and it’s a fine reminder that a new girl can face tough competition from a hot older woman.
