It’s common knowledge that each week here at COED, we share our reviews of new and exciting liquor brands. You should also know that we take the time to concoct a few tasty mixed drink recipes to go along with each brand. You shouldn’t feel bad for us in the slightest but this job, at times, can be quite challenging. Other times, it’s a breeze… This week it was surprisingly simple due in large part to the quality of products we have on-hand for review.  We’re featuring vodka from Canada called FLYTE, Tequila from SX Liquors, and new honey bourbon liqueur from Bärenjäger. Soooo… what are you waiting for? Our reviews and recipes are waiting for you below!

SX cha cha cha Reposado Tequila

Released in June of 2011 and produced from 100% blue agave, SX cha cha cha is Reposado Tequila with a hint of honey and the exotic bite of Mexican lemons. It is the brain child of CEO David Knight, a proven business leader who has managed and grown some of the world’s largest brands. Knight is a global marketing expert and executive who worked for Frito Lay, Gatorade, PepsiCo, Quaker Oats and eBay before starting SXLiquors. Needless to say this very young company seems to be in very capable hands.

Earlier this week SX Liquors approached us with one of the most unique and sexy bottles of tequila we’d ever seen. They asked us to taste, test, and review it… we were flattered and thirsty, so we took the job!

Proof: 70 (35% ABV)
Age: N/A
Flavors: Honey, Citrus, Agave
TasteB+ (Very Good)
Mix-ability: B+ (Very Good)
Buzz Factor: B (Good)
Price$29.99 USD (750 ml)

Overall: We give SX Cha Cha Cha a B+ (Highly Recommended). The bottle is as, if not more amazing than it appears in pictures! It’s a total conversation piece and would quickly spruce up any home bar. As for the tequila held within… it’s delicious and smooth. The honey and lemon tones make this reposado easy to drink both mixed and straight up. If you’re lucky enough to find SX Liquors in your area we suggest you pick up a bottle. Or find them online!

MIX IT UP WITH“Sexy & I Know It”

Ingredients:  2 oz SX Cha Cha Cha Reposado Tequila, 1 oz rum (dark), 3 oz lime soda, 1 splash maraschino cherry juice, 1/2 oz orange schnapps, 2 maraschino cherries.

Directions:  Drop the cherries and some ice into a highball glass. Pour the SX Cha Cha Cha, Rum, lime soda and orange schnapps into the glass. Add a splash of maraschino cherry juice on top, stir and serve.

Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon

Recently announced and made available to the public this April, Bärenjäger (the cousin of Jägermeister) has produced it’s first-ever line extension. They’re calling simply – Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon and it is said to be a delicious blend of premium honey liqueur and Kentucky bourbon whiskey, made with generous amounts of pure honey and all natural ingredients.

Proof: 70 (35% ABV)
Age: N/A
Flavors: Honey, vanilla, bourbon
TasteB+ (Very Good)
Mix-ability: B+ (Very Good)
Buzz Factor: C+ (Above Average)
Price$28.99 USD (750ml)

Overall: We give Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon a B (Recommended).  It’s absolutely unique and unapologetically sweet. We’ve seen other distillers like Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey jump on the honey trend in the past year, but this is something Bärenjäger has been doing for a long time and it shows in the final product! The honey and bourbon complement each other nicely and in our opinion this liqueur is best served mixed. Fans of the original Bärenjäger will love new edition to their line.

MIX IT UP WITH: “German Martini”

Ingredients: 2.5 parts Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon, 1/2 part sweet vermouth, 2 dashes orange bitters

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, stir and strain into a martini glass. Rim glass with a lemon peel. Garnigh with a lemon peel.

FLYTE Vodka

You’re looking at Canada’s very first premium Vodka! They’re calling it FLYTE and it’s distilled from fine Canadian grains and the pure spring water. Based on a 150 year old recipe, the distillers at FLYTE claim they’ve achieved a remarkable flavor with an extraordinary clarity. Before ever being bottled, FLYTE Vodka undergoes a continuous distillation process to attain its flavor with and smoothness.

Proof: 80 (40% ABV)
Age: Unaged
Flavors: Neutral
Taste: A-  (Excellent)
Mix-abilityB+ (Very Good)
Buzz Factor: B (Okay)
Price$32.99 USD (750ml)

Overall: We give FLYTE Vodka a B+ (Highly Recommended). This vodka is tremendously smooth, making it truly versatile for a wide swath of mixing and shot concoctions! We could do without the somewhat bitter aftertaste, but honestly FLYTE has caught our eye (and taste buds) and it’s one bottle that we plan to keep in-stock in our secret stash!

MIX IT UP WITH: “Free Fallin’”

Ingredients: 2 oz. Flyte Vodka, 1 oz peach schnapps, 1 oz triple sec, 4 oz grapefruit juice, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 1 oz orange juice.

Directions: Pour the lemon vodka, peach schnapps and triple sec into a collins glass filled with ice cubes. Add the juices, and stir vigorously. Top with extra grapefruit juice if desired, and serve.
