This past summer COED previewed what looked to be the biggest sports game of the year in NBA 2K12. Needless to say it has not disappointed – hours of my life and COEDitor Ned’s have been spent dueling via XBox Live. Sports games already have great re-playability but NBA 2K12 took it to the next level with their Legends Showcase add-on. We got a chance to check it out and have some copies to give away to four lucky readers! Read on for details.
NBA 2K12 is the latest chapter in the incredible NBA series from 2K Sports. Year in and year out, 2K outdoes itself and you find yourself constantly wowed by how they continue to improve the already near perfect product. This year was no different, and on top of an improved game, 2K took another huge step with their downloadable content, mainly the Legends Showcase. I really didn’t know what to expect when I first began to demo it, but soon after I started playing I was pleasantly surprised. At only about ten bucks you receive an entirely new game, something that five years ago would have run you the cost of a normal full priced video game.
The Legends Showcase combines elements both new and old to provide the player with a unique gaming experience. Remember when you were 13 or 14 years old and spent days at a time playing NBA Street on your PS2…because I do. The Legends Showcase brings elements of that classic game and combines it with better graphics and more realistic game-play.
You are transported into a comic book like world that puts you in a digitized version of Times Square. The lights are bright, the crowds are growing and you get to choose from five unique game modes. You can play 2 on 2, 3 on 3, HORSE, 21 or a standard pick up game. The 2 on 2 mode is what brings me back to my NBA Street days. You choose your two legends and play a sort of circuit which finds you matched up against another pair of legends.
The pairings are composed of legendary players from a given NBA team. Naturally I chose the Bulls so I could roll with Michael Jordan (and Scottie Pippen). Once you beat a team, you climb the ladder to the top to claim your position at the top of the Legends Showcase. Each game is a challenge and you really need to think of match-ups, because believe me, it is not easy to cover the likes of Alonzo Mourning or Hakeem Olajuwon with Scottie Pippen.
The 3 on 3, 21 and pick up game modes are all pretty self-explanatory, but where things get really different are in the HORSE mode. This is not your standard game of HORSE where you just trade jumpers with the opposition. The mode is full of dozens upon dozens of trick shots, which you can choose where and how you want to shoot it. For example, you choose your shot, how far from the hoop you want to be, if you want a bank or a swish, and how much arc you want on the shot. When I say trick shots, I really emphasize the word trick. You can shoot sitting down, backwards, hook shots, Hail-Mary style…the possibilities are endless, making the HORSE mode very fun, challenging and re-playable.
Gameplay aside, this is some of the best downloadable content out there. The graphics are really cool, making the NBA Legends look as if they are playing in a graphic novel. Combining comic book style art and basketball sounds kind of strange, but it presents a unique and innovative presentation. Also, the amount of legends they include in this mode is out of this world. They have the obvious players, like Jordan, Bird, Magic and Olajuwon to name a few, but they also included cool and obscure players you wouldn’t expect. Guys like World B. Free, Dan Majerle and Jamal Mashburn are awesome additions, and true NBA fans will appreciate that. Yes, there are some undeserving “legends” but in my opinion, the more players, the better.
