In Memory Of Amy Winehouse [SONGS OF THE WEEK]

I was genuinely shook up when I heard about the loss of Amy Winehouse over this past weekend. My first thought was, “There goes another good one.” Why do the best ones always seem to have the biggest problems? Why didn’t anyone help her? Why couldn’t she see herself self-destructing like the rest of the world did and change her ways? Addiction really is a killer.

There are a million questions we can ask about the demise of this troubled, yet extremely talented, singer from the UK that made the world take notice with the release of her 2006 gem, “Back to Black.” I hadn’t heard soul music with hip hop undertones so eloquently represented by a female in quite some time.

Her voice had strength and beauty, reminiscent of Etta James, Nina Simone, and Donny Hathaway. The sky was the limit to how far Amy Winehouse could have soared had she overcome her demons. But she couldn’t. And that is what is the most disheartening.

In her memory, we dedicate this week’s SOTW to her. Check out my picks then vote for your favorite below.

I’m sure some people are wondering why “Rehab” isn’t on this list. I just didn’t feel it was appropriate. Its twisted irony will only remind people of her passing. This article is intended to celebrate her life. I’m glad I was able to see Winehouse perform live and that her albums will remain a staple in my collection for years to come. She will truly be missed. Rest in Peace, Amy.
