It wasn’t very common to see gamers fawning over female video game characters 20 or so years ago. Such affections were geared towards the ladies of comics and movies; 8-bit and 16-bit women just don’t scream “sex appeal.” But ever since Lara Croft came blasting her way into the hearts of geeks everywhere one brisk October in 1996, you can’t walk into GameStop without seeing a group of nerds worshiping a poster of Chun-Li or some sweaty creepy guy in a trench coat ogling that copy of Dead Or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball sitting in the bargain bin. There are many video game vixens that make us all weak at the knees, but – for the sake of time – we’ve narrowed it down to the 10 best! See which ones made the cut and hold this prestigious honor!
10) Sarah Morrison (Tabula Rasa)
Sarah Morrison is the star of Tabula Rasa, a massive multiplayer game on the PC that had a popular run for several years. The character of Sarah Morrison was featured on the game’s cover art as well as its ten minute intro movie. Gamers were instantly smitten with her sexy appeal and it was because of this adoration she eventually “posed” nude for Playboy as part of a their “Video Game Girls” pictorial.
9) Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark Zero)
The N64’s Perfect Dark is a classic first-person shooter made by Rare – the folks who made Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. Heralded as the “spiritual sequel” to the legendary GoldenEye, Perfect Dark featured sexy super-spy Joanna Dark. She talked tough, shot straight and wore a skin-tight leather suit. When she returned in the XBox 360’s Perfect Dark Zero, technology had finally reached a point where we could see Joanna as the hottie she truly is. Zero used full body scans of actress Rachel Leigh Cook to create Joanna, and the results speak for themselves.
8) Alicia Claus (Bulletwitch)
This Xbox 360 third-person shooter stars Alicia Claus, a gun-slinging, take-no-prisoners witch. While the game generally got mixed reviews, there was never any doubt about Alicia’s sexy aura. She too has appeared in Playboy as a part of their “Video Game Girls” pictorial.
Her name was Agent Jessica McCarney and she was there to help Frank West fight the zombie invasion in 2009’s Dead Rising. The bad news is that she eventually turns into a zombie herself and you no choice but to shoot her in the head. But there is a silver lining to all this! When she is alive, you gets points for taking photos of her cleavage. Now that’s photojournalism!
6) Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
Chun-Li is considered the first female playable character in a fighting game. Whether in Street Fighter games, comics, tv shows or movies, there’s something about a flexible hottie with legs of steel that we just can’t get enough of. Although our favorite Chun-Li has got to be 2009’s The Legend of Chun-Li, a live-action flick starring Kristin Kreuk.
5) The Ladies Of God Of War (God of War)
The God of War series has more babes then we can really keep track of. From the mini-game three-ways to characters like Hecuba Maneros – who appeared in Playboy in 2010 – god-killer Kratos seemingly has enough girls to fill a coliseum! Legendary…
4) Rayne (BloodRayne)
Rayne is half vampire, half human and all babe. While the series of video games has long since fizzled out, and the movies are generally regarded as awful, the character Rayne is still at the top of her bloodsucking game. Excuse the redundancy, but she too posed for Playboy’s 2009 “Video Game Girls” pictorial.
3) The Girls Of DOA (Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball)
Dead or Alive started out as a relatively successful series of fighting games, but in 2003, however, Dead or Alive was reinvented as soft-core porn with the release of Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball. This game took all the female characters from the previous three DOA games, stuck them in bikinis and had them play volleyball. Some people called it a desperate move to revive a flagging series. Personally, however, we think the world has enough fighting games, so bring on the bikinis!
2) Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
When it comes to hot video game girls, you have to give a nod to the true original. And while Lara Croft has been around since 1996, she’s still as hot as ever. Featured in countless games of varying quality, Lara has been most famously portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two movies. Whether rendered by artists, models (notably actress Rhona Mitra) or by Jolie, Lara shows no signs of hanging up her whip anytime soon.
1) Bayonetta (Bayonetta)
Bayonetta is the new girl on the scene, but in 2010’s Bayonetta, this acrobatic witch shot, sliced and cursed her way through wave after wave of brutal, fast-paced combat, and by the time it was all over a legend had been born. Maybe it’s the skin-tight outfit. The glasses. Or maybe it’s the guns strapped to her feet. Whatever the case, Bayonetta has put a spell on us.
