The 20 Most Anticipated Guy Movies of 2011: Part One
It’s never too early to start thinking ahead. Laden with sequels and comic book movies and comic book movie sequels, here are the top 20 guy movies coming out in 2011, Part 1 (#20-11)
20) James Bond 23
It’s back but this time it’s being made by real filmmakers. The film is being directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road) and written by Peter Morgan (The Last King of Scotland, Frost/Nixon). Bond is back from his trip to South America where he prevented the price of water from getting too high and ready to kick some ass in New York.
19) Mission Impossible 4
Yep. It’s back. Tom Cruise is back and raising money for the Scientologists. Unfortunately, J.J. Abrams is back after having made M:I3 so the jury is still out on how good it will be but hopefully he has learned a couple things from making Star Trek last year.
18) The Hobbit
Peter Jackson is back…sort of. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson will produce the two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel which will be directed by Pan’s Labyrinth’s Guillermo Del Toro and will star Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving. It is due out December 2011.
A spin-off of a spin-off, Ryan Reynolds is reborn as Deadpool, one of the villains from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Deadpool will be significantly different from the character in Wolverine, mostly because you can’t have a two-hour film in which the main character is silent for two hours. This film could very likely steal the thunder of a lot of bigger comic book films being released in 2011.
16) Sherlock Holmes 2
I don’t know when Robert Downey Jr. finds time to sleep but he and co-star Jude Law are already set for the sequel and Brad Pitt will reportedly be joining the cast as Professor Moriatry. Pitt and director Guy Ritchie had previously done “Snatch” together. The sequel was approved almost instantly after the original opened to huge box office numbers (the movie sold the age old problem of Sherlock Holmes not kicking enough ass) and decent reviews.
15) Straw Dogs
One of the most violent and most graphic psychological thrillers of all time is being remade and it looks awesome. James Marsden will play Dustin Hoffman’s David Sumner character while Kate Bosworth, James Woods, and Alexander Skarsgard co-star. The film is scheduled to be released in February of 2011.
14) I Am Legend 2
After it made nearly $80 million in its first weekend, Warner Bros. couldn’t wait to make the next one. Will Smith is back in what is expected to be a prequel to the first film in which Robert Neville and his crew try to make one last stand and is expected to end where the first one began.
13) True Grit
In a reprisal of the famous John Wayne film, the Coen Brothers (directors of Fargo, No Country For Old Men) are filming the story of a U.S. Marshall who helps a woman find who killed her father. The film will star Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, and Josh Brolin and is due out at the beginning of 2011.
Moneyball, an unlikely adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book on Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane is being adapted into what will undoubtedly be an awesome film for sports nuts. The film will be directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Brad Pitt and Demetri Martin with appearances from plenty of MLB players.
11) Zombieland 2
The amount of ass that the first film kicked immediately prompted the filmmakers to start on a sequel. The highest grossing zombie film in history will keep the main cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin and is due out towards the end of 2011.
Stay tuned for part II!
