The end of the year is the perfect time to celebrate America’s pastime: watching people get their heads smashed in. The UFC definitely brought it this year with some awesome face restructuring performances. Here are the five most brutal knockouts of 2009.

Todd Duffee

In his UFC debut and just his fifth professional fight, the undefeated heavyweight knocked out Canadian fighter Tim Hague who was making his second trip to the octagon, setting a new UFC record. Duffee knocked out Hague (with a barrage of massive blows) in just seven seconds at UFC 102.

Brock Lesnar

No one has ever doubted Lesnar’s power and he demonstrated just how strong he is by pummeling Frank Mir, the only man who has ever beaten Lesnar, at UFC 100. Lesnar would unify the UFC Heavyweight Championship in that fight after winning the official UFC belt in a similar destruction of Randy Couture.

Matt Hamill

Hamill had been a great wrestler but not much of a striker in his early career. He had shown that he had developed into a very good puncher in his knockout wins over Tim Boetsch and Andy Reese but in his fight against Mark Munoz at UFC 96, Hamill showed that he had become quite the kicker as well as he knocked Munoz out cold with a roundhouse kick.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

After a bad beat to Forrest Griffin, Shogun had defeated Mark Coleman and was trying to establish himself as a force in the UFC Light Heavyweight division. He did just that as he knocked former champion Chuck Liddell out cold in the first round and earned himself a title shot while nearly ending the Iceman’s career.

Shane Carwin

Coming off of two knock out wins in his first two fights in the UFC, Carwin was looking for a shot at the champ. He got just that when he knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga with a straight right hand at UFC 96, earning a shot at Brock Lesnar.
