College Football Week 6: Cheerleader Edition
It’s almost the weekend and that means you’re only hours from sitting on your couch, eating bags of Doritos and watching as much football as your beer-addled brain can handle. And if it doesn’t mean that, you’re doing something wrong with your life. No. 1 Oklahoma (4-0) at Baylor (2-2)
You KNOW Oklahoma has already moved on to preparing for Texas, but they nevertheless need to hit the road against Baylor. The nation’s top-ranked team is averaging 50 points a game and has defeated the Bears 12 straight times in conference play by an average of more than 24 points. Baylor needs one more win to match last season’s total – fingers crossed! Probably not going to be this week for lowly Baylor.

No. 2 Alabama (5-0) vs Kentucky (4-0)
Alabama returns to Tuscaloosa for its first SEC home game against Kentucky. The Crimson Tide’s meteoric rise has them playing with their highest ranking in 15 years. The Wildcats have the nation’s stingiest defense, allowing just 22 points in four games, but Nick Saban has said that there are specially created offensive packages to help them jump to No. 1 in the BCS. Alabama leads the series with Kentucky 33-2-1 and is 8-0 in Tuscaloosa. Kentucky has a strong team, but Alabama has too much momentum. If the wind blows the right way – look for a potential upset here.

No. 4 Missouri (4-0) at Nebraska (3-1)
Missouri opens its Big 12 schedule with its first road game of the season. Chase Daniel has been nearly perfect in leading the Tigers’ offense, which is second in the country in scoring and total yards. The Huskers, coming off a loss to Virginia Tech, have won 15 straight against Missouri in Lincoln – but don’t count on this to be number 16. Missouri will make this a track meet early and Nebraska should be sucking wind bad by the middle of the second quarter.

No. 5 Texas (4-0) at Colorado (3-1)
Last season, Oklahoma’s trip to the BCS title was derailed by at Colorado in its Big 12 opener. The Buffaloes seem to have Texas’ number when it comes to being a spoiler. The Horns have been dominant in the early going, outscoring opponents 198-43 overall. Colorado has lost five of its past six meetings with Texas, including the past two in Boulder.

No. 6 Penn State (5-0) at Purdue (2-2)
Penn State is on the road again when it heads to Purdue. Four of the Nittany Lions’ next five games are on the road. PSU is 9-16 on the road since the 2003 season, that’s not really good. In three career games against Penn State – all Purdue losses – Curtis Painter has not thrown a touchdown pass in 104 attempts…ouch. That means he and I have thrown the same amount of TDs against the Lions, and I am a huge fat-ass.

No. 7 Texas Tech (4-0) at Kansas State (3-1)
It should be a high-scoring affair when a pair of top-10 scoring offenses with underachieving defenses meet in Manhattan…Kansas that is. The Wildcats have been outscored 132-64 in losing their last three meetings with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 6-3. Ranking aside – this is pretty much a crap shoot on who gets the ball last. If the Red Raiders D can get to the QB early, they could pull away early.

No. 8 Brigham Young (4-0) at Utah State (1-3)
Welcome to the 2008 Mormon Bowl! BYU and Utah State are bringing all of their wives together when BYU looks to extend the nation’s longest win streak to 15 games. Max Hall leads a potent offense that’s No. 7 in the nation in passing and No. 11 in points scored. Utah State is 1-46 against ranked opponents. The Cougars have won eight in a row against Utah State since a 58-56 loss in 1993. Look for the BYU Big Loves to lay the smackdown on their State University rivals.

No. 9 USC (2-1) vs No. 23 Oregon (4-1)
The Trojan’s weekly meetings can be summed up like this, “F*%K! Not ANOTHER Oregon school!?” USC tries to rebound after Oregon State, but most importantly will also be seeking some revenge after the Ducks dealt them a defeat last season. USC has won 14 games in a row against ranked opponents in the Coliseum. The Ducks are better than the Beavers, so look for a close game if they can get into USC’s head…good luck with THAT one.
